The invention of the sewing machine was monumental because for centuries, all clothing was made laboriously by using a needle and thread. Designed in 1790 originally to sew tough materials like leather and canvas, but not patented until 1846, the sewing machine promised relief from countless hours of hand labor and was named the "Queen of Inventions" in 1860 for its beginnings of factory work with countless yards of fabric quickly being turned into clothes.
