What began in 1927 to commemorate the nation's 150 year existence was never completed. Originally the four presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln were supposed to be depicted to the waist, but due to a lack of funding only the faces were carved out of the rock before work ceased. These four presidents were selected because of their efforts to preserve the Republic for which our flag stands and for expanding the territory that grew the Union. The Black Hills of South Dakota are a tourist draw because of the Harney Peak that houses the presidents and there are nearly three million people that visit them every year. This personalized Mt. Rushmore ornament is gold in color and is a great momento for a trip through the Badlands.
