Scrabble Fun Using Scrabble Tiles To Make A Unique Family Gift

April 13 is a day dedicated to my favorite game: Scrabble! I have seen so many different uses for Scrabble Tiles such as jewelry and different crafts, that I thought it would be fun to use them to make a unique family decoration for Scrabble Day.

Scrabble is a famous word game that is sold in 121 countries and available in 29 languages with 150 million sets sold worldwide. Do you know that one-third of American households have a set of the 100 scrabble tiles and game board?

Brief History Of Scrabble and Scrabble Tiles

Scrabble was designed in 1938 by an American architect Alfred Mosher Butts who worked out the distributions of the scrabble tiles and point values by performing the frequency analysis of letters from various sources, such as the New York Times. He originally manufactured the game called Criss-Crosswords but was unsuccessful in selling to a manufacturer until James Brunot bought the rights and changed the name to Scrabble in 1948.

It wasn’t until 1952 that Scrabble became a household name when Jack Straus, president of Macy’s, played the game with his family on vacation, and upon returning home was surprised that his store didn’t carry Scrabble. He placed a large order for the scrabble tiles and game, and all of a sudden, every American household had to have one!

Scrabble Day DIY Craft Using Scrabble Tiles

You can make your very own Scrabble craft using scrabble tiles in five easy steps! We love decorating our home with personalized crafts for the different holidays and this scrabble bulletin board is a great family gift or present for grandparents. Since every family has their own unique names, every one of these that you make will be distinctive and the only one of its kind!

Supplies:

  • Scrabble Tiles (purchase at a craft store or online)
  • Unfinished bulletin board
  • Wood Glue or Craft Glue
  • Paint (optional)
  • Paint Marker (optional)

Step 1: Spell out all of the names you want to use using the tiles. It is OK if you don’t have all of the letters because you will be overlapping.

Step 2: Using the bulletin board, start arranging the names, intersecting them as necessary or to make it look aesthetically pleasing. This is the fun part! Keep rearranging until you have a look that you want and all of the names are included and it looks like a Scrabble game board.

Step 3: Glue the tiles down on the bulletin board. Let the scrabble tiles dry.

Step 4 (OPTIONAL): Once the tiles have adhered and they are dry, paint the border of the bulletin board and let it dry. We painted the border blue and added yellow polka dots. Get creative with colors!

Step 5 (OPTIONAL): Using a paint marker, write a favorite saying or permanent message directly on the cork. We chose to write “IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES WITH GRANDMA AND GRANDPA!”

That’s it! Attach the wall hanging brackets to the back of your board and hang it on the wall!

This scrabble tiles bulletin board makes a great gift for grandparents or for your whole family! Pin important notes, events or reminders to your scrabble craft for a unique decoration for your home kitchen. Share this with friends and family so they can make their own unique bulletin board!
