An archetypal armored dinosaur the ankylosaurus was one of the heaviest dinosaurs with a low-slung and wide body. These prehistoric animals are well known for their massive plates and knobs of bone embedded in the skin and triangular spikes in the tail that provided protection from predator dinosaurs. An herbivore, the ankylosaurus has fused vertibrae and bones to allow for the swinging of the tail as a defense mechanism while they ate vegetation.
