Checkmate! This shield shaped ornament depicts the black and white squares of a chessboard and three chess pieces. The white chess pieces shown are the knight, king and bishop. Chess enthusiasts study the game and learn the methods of sacrificing pieces to attack and win the game that has been around since the 6th century. This game is popular all over the world and before the internet, people often played games by mail, posting one move at a time, anxiously waiting for the post office to deliver their opponent's position. Chess tournaments are still played even though computers have replaced the need for an opposing player, and a computer even beat a chess world champion in 1997!
