Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of WWI With Our DIY Ornament!

It’s hard to believe that the 100 WWI Anniversary has arrived!  When the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, The Great War had finally come to an end after over 4 years of fighting.  The War To End All Wars will long be remembered as the war that involved not just Europe, but the entire world, who was forced to choose a side, resulting in over 9 million military personnel and 7 million civilian deaths across the globe.

To commemorate the 100WWI Anniversary and the end of the First World War, we will show you how to make WWI Ornaments.  They are easy to make and will be a patriotic memory for your Christmas tree.  They make wonderful keepsake ornaments to remember ancestors who fought for freedom during those difficult times.  WWI Ornaments are wonderful ways to decorate for Memorial Day, 4 of July and Veteran’s Day too!

How To Make 100 WWI Anniversary WWI Ornaments

WWI Ornaments are simple to make and are a fun way to celebrate the 100 WWI Anniversary.  Great family activity or classroom project that can be made in conjunction with a history unit on WWI!

Supplies:

  • Clear plastic heart ornament
  • Blue paint
  • Red paint
  • White paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Black paint marker
  • White paint marker
  • Patriotic ribbon
  • Scissors

WWI Ornaments – Steps 1 – 4

Step 1: The American flag will be painted on the inside of the heart ornament.  Open the two pieces and select which piece will be the back.  Paint a blue field in the left corner of the top of the heart.  Let it dry.

Step 2: Starting at the top, paint red stripes going all the way across the heart in as straight a line as possible, following the curves.  Then, let it dry.

Step 3: Next, fill in the stripes in between the red ones with the white paint, making sure to keep your lines as straight as possible.  Let it dry.

Step 4: Using the white paint marker, draw stars in the blue field.  Try and make them evenly separated and in distinct rows.  Then, let it dry.

WWI Ornaments – Steps 5 – 7

Step 5:  Now it’s time to personalize the other piece of the heart.  On the outside, personalize WWI and the years, as well as 100 WWI anniversary, using the black paint marker.  Or, you can personalize with a specific soldier’s name, rank and division, if you want this on your family tree.  Then, let the paint marker dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 6: Once both halves are dry, snap them together.

Note: If they are loose, you might want to add a dab of glue.

Step 7:  We’re almost done!  Finally, cut a strand of ribbon, feed it through the hole in both halves of the WWI ornaments and tie a knot at the top, so it is ready to hang.
