Use A Rainbow Of Crayons To Create Colorful Swirled DIY Ornaments

Do you remember how excited you were to get a box of 64 Crayola Crayons, with the built in sharpener, when shopping for school supplies? The box signified a limitless opportunity to create anything your young imagination could dream up. Today, crayons are still a back to school staple for grade school students, but I have discovered that they can also be used to make the prettiest glass ornaments to decorate your home.

If you are feeling nostalgic for crayons or want a fun project for kids, ornaments made with melted crayons and crayon box ornaments are colorful showstoppers. No two ornaments will be the same when you let everyone pick their own colors to mix and match!

How To Make A Melted Crayons Ornament

Crayola Crayons come in a rainbow of colors, so mix and match to your heart’s content! We found that using two or three different colored crayons make the best looking ornaments.

Supplies:

  • Clear glass ball ornament (we used iridescent glass balls for enhanced rainbow effect)
  • Crayola Crayons (this brand provides the best melting results)
  • Exacto knife
  • Hair dryer
  • Oven mitt or winter gloves
  • Colorful ribbon

Step 1: Remove the paper from the crayons and cut each crayon into approximately six pieces using an exacto knife.

Step 2: Remove the cap from the ornament and drop 3 to 4 crayon pieces into the hole.

Step 3: Replace the cap back on the ornament and using the hair dryer on a high setting, heat up the crayons inside of the glass ball until they start to melt and move around easily.

Step 4: Using an oven mitt or winter glove, swirl the melting crayons around to coat the inside of the ornament.  Note: Ornaments will get very hot as you are doing this, so make sure if you use gloves, they are insulated!

Once you have reached desired coverage of the crayons, remove from the heat. If there are pieces of the crayons left inside, carefully remove the cap and turn out the remaining pieces.  Note: If the pieces don’t fall out of the glass ball ornament, use the hair dryer to heat them up again and let them slide out.

Tie it with a colorful ribbon, and you are done! It was so fun to make Melted Crayons Ornaments that I couldn’t stop at making only one! With so many color combinations to make, we dare you to try!
