Learn all about the history of Record Store Day and why it’s one of the biggest days of the year for music and vinyl fans alike!

Red Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar Ornament | OrnamentShop.comI remember listening to records of my favorite songs like it was yesterday. But, nowadays, with CDs, smartphones, and iPods, listening to records feels like a thing of the past.

However, Record Store Day has brought the record industry back to life again, and – in the process – brought some found memories of years past along with it.

The history of Record Store Day begins in 2007, when a group of record store owners, inspired by Free Comic Book Day, created an event to celebrate the individuality and unique qualities of the local record store. Little did they know, they had started a worldwide phenomenon, with the first annual Record Store Day held in April 2008!

Currently celebrated on the third Saturday of April every year, Record Store Day events are hosted all around the world, and it has quickly become one of the biggest vinyl sales days of the year!

Why is Record Store Day important?

Black Gibson SG Electric Guitar Christmas Ornament | OrnamentShop.comIt celebrates independently owned record stores as they band together with the community to enjoy exclusive, very-limited vinyl and CD releases. The camaraderie and shared passion for music is what makes Record Store Day truly special, as collectors, music fans, artists, and independent record stores join together to celebrate their fascinating hobby.

Of course, Record Store Day is about more than just selling vinyl and CD releases. It also includes various types of festivities! Each record store holds its own Record Store Day party and welcomes all to help celebrate this wonderful day! These parties can include special performances from artists, as well as meet-and-greets before and after the show.

Obviously, due to the local nature of Record Store Day, events may vary depending on your area. Some stores hold full on parades with cookouts, games, and special guests!

There are often lines of people waiting to get in the stores, so if you want first crack at what Record Store Day has to offer, show up early! Also, be sure not to ruin the well-meaning, good vibes of the day by pushing and shoving to get your record. Soak in the atmosphere, be polite, and be patient!
