How To Make Plastic Bottle Craft Snowflake Ornaments
Here, we show you how to make snowflake ornaments to add to your Christmas tree! If you have been wanting to repurpose your water bottles, this plastic bottle craft is the ideal project! For a really cool idea, insert your Christmas lights through the hole at the top to see them glow on the tree!
- Plastic water bottles
- Exacto blade, crafting knife or box cutter
- Snow glitter
- Hole puncher
Snowflake Ornaments Steps 1 – 4
Step 1: Using the exacto blade, poke the tip the bottle approximately ½” from the base. Holding the bottle with one hand, carefully slide the knife all the way around the bottle, slowly rotating the bottle in your hand, until the bottom comes off. The ends do not have to be perfectly even.
Note: This plastic bottle craft works best with water bottles, because the plastic is thin and easy to cut. Soda bottles have a thicker plastic and will be more challenging to cut.
Step 2: Next, blot any water droplets that remain in the bottom with a paper towel and recycle the top parts of the water bottle.
Note: If your plastic is wet, your paint will thin and not spread evenly, and your glue may not adhere properly.
Step 3: The first part of the plastic bottle craft is to coat the inside of the bottom with glue. We left gaps to see easily see the design through the other side, as well as give the snowflake ornaments some dimension.
Step 4: While the glue is wet, shake your glitter onto the glue and gently press to help it stick. We used the paper snow with glitter to give it a bit of texture. It is OK to overfill as the remaining “snow” will simply fall off.
Snowflake Ornaments Steps 5 – 8
Step 5: Once the glue is dry, shake off any remaining “snow”. Now it’s time to paint the outside of your Snowflake ornaments. Flip your snowflake ornaments over. Because the water bottle bases have grooves in them, it is easy to follow these crevices with your paintbrush to keep the design consistent. Let them dry.
Step 6: Next, using the hole puncher, punch a hole in each of your snowflake ornaments. It is important to make sure that the paint and glue is dry prior to punching the hole, or your puncher could get messy.
Step 7: Next, you can add glue and glitter embellishments to fill the indented center on the outside of the plastic bottle craft. Let it dry and shake off any remaining “snow”.
Step 8: Finally, it is time to put the finishing touches on your plastic bottle craft. Cut a piece of ribbon, thread it through the hole and tie a knot at the top to secure your Snowflake ornaments for hanging.
That’s it! Now you have unique, one-of-a-kind snowflake ornaments to decorate your Christmas tree for the holidays. This plastic bottle craft makes a wonderful family activity or grade school classroom project that can be done in conjunction with an educational unit on recycling and repurposing.
