This instrument goes by Appalachian dulcimer or mountain dulcimer and has its origins in the Appalachian mountains by the Scots-Irish immigrant communities that settled there. A member of the zither family, this fretted string instrument typically has three or four strings. This four-stringed replica ornament is prevalent in folk music and four strings allows more complex chords to be played that are needed for jazz music. The dulcimer is often played while streched across the lap or for a better sound it is rested on the floor of piece of furniture. The frets are arranged in a diatonic scale and if you need to play it in a different scale, you will need to retune the entire instrument.
