Repurpose Old Glass Trinkets To Enjoy Rainbows On Earth Day

Looking for a Repurpose project to celebrate Earth Day? Discover how you can light up any sunny room in your house with rainbows using Glass items you have lying around at home. It’s easy and will be a unique decoration that can have either a vintage or modern look and feel, depending on your current home décor.

Earth Day is April 22 and it is a time to reflect on what you can do to save the environment. Many people walk, carpool or take public transportation to work. Others plant a tree. I decided that I wanted to repurpose useless items in my home into something new. I love beautiful glass and rainbows, so my project does exactly that!

Earth Day

Everyone has old glass items hanging around that don’t get used, or a set of glasses that is no longer a set because some have broken over the years. Repurpose them on Earth Day! If you don’t have enough glass, you can pick up items at a garage sale, estate sale or resale shop.

How To Repurpose Glass Into Rainbows On Earth Day

Here are step by step instructions to make your very own stained glass window using glass items you aren’t using in your home anymore such as wine glasses, bowls, candy dishes, ring holders. The options are unlimited, but using cut or faceted glass will work the best for making rainbows. On Earth Day, repurpose these glass items into a unique work of art. It’s easy!

Supplies You Will Need To Repurpose Glass on Earth Day:

  • Glass Window, Sheet of Glass or Glass Pane large enough to fit in a window
  • Various Glass or Crystal bowls, dishes, candle sticks, etc.
  • Heavy duty Glass Glue
  • Glass Beads or Flat Glass Marbles you can get at a craft store

Step 1: Lay the piece of glass flat on a work surface. You may want to lay on a blanket or other padded material to pad the surface of your work area. For the best adherence and rainbows, thoroughly clean the glass with window cleaner. Aesthetically arrange all of the glass or crystal items onto the sheet of glass.

Step 2: Glue each of the glass or crystal pieces down individually. Make sure that you glue ONLY the areas that need to adhere to the piece of glass! Don’t cover the entire area with glue, stick to the edges. Let dry completely.

Note: When gluing the items, make sure the cover the surface as much as you can. It is OK to have the surfaces overlapping as long as each of the glass or crystal pieces can safely stay adhered with the glue.

Step 3: Add embellishments such as those little glass pebbles and flat marbles that you can find at a craft store to fill in the empty corners and areas in between the individual pieces. Use your creativity!

Carefully hang in your window or prop the glass pane up. You may need another set of hands to help because it will be heavy! Now you can watch for rainbows on your walls all over the room when the sun hits the facets of the cut glass or crystal pieces on the window pane.
